Portable blow up pools, "kiddie pools" and Slip-n-Slides are fun ways to keep cool in the summer. Prevent the growth of microorganisms - which can make you sick - empty the water each day and refill with fresh water before using again.

Fireworks part of your July 4th celebration? Keep a garden hose or bucket of water handy for emergencies. Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Instead, soak with water and throw away.

Parents did you know that young children offer suffer injuries as the result of sparklers? Sparklers burn at about 2000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals. If fireworks will be part of your July 4th holiday, have an adult supervise the fireworks activities.

With easy access to water, boating is a popular recreational activity in our area. Keep boating safe. Wear a life jacket EVERY time. More than 70% of those who died in a boating incident drowned. And more than 90% of those who drowned weren't wearing life jackets.

Drowning is the leading cause of more deaths among children 1-4 years of age except birth defects. Two to three children die every day in the US as a result of drowning. Always supervise children when in or around water. Teach kids to swim with formal swimming lessons. And learn CPR. Warmer temps mean mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas - which can transmit West Nile virus, Lyme disease and other illnesses. Use appropriate insect and tick repellant and remember that while prime mosquito biting time is dusk to dawn - ticks are out all the time.
