Second Annual Bayou
Region Race for the Cure®
to be Held October 23
Lace up your running shoes. It's time to Race for the Cure®!
The Bayou Region Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation is pleased to announce that the Second Annual Bayou
Region Race for the Cure® is scheduled for Saturday, October
23, 1999 at 9 am in Peltier Park. Post-race entertainment will
be provided by Charmaine Neville.
The 5K race, which raised over $50,000 last year, is expected
to attract more than 2,000 runners and walkers this year. Up
to 75 percent of the proceeds will be used to fund local breast
cancer projects and 25 percent directly funds national research.
Funds raised by the 1998 Bayou Region Race for the Cure®
funded several projects in our community, including: Survivor
to Survivor Communication Project; Breast Cancer Education Program
for 8th grade girls; On Her Side Program providing purchasing
assistance for breast forms and brassieres through Leonard J.
Chabert Medical Center; Lymphedema Education Project; Mom and
Me Program for African American mothers and daughters; Choices
interactive computer diagnosis system; Breast Cancer Interactive
Web Site and the Sister Reach Project for African American Women.
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is a non-profit corporation
which was founded in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory
of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of breast cancer at the
age of 36.
Seventeen years later, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
is credited as the nation's leading catalyst in the fight against
breast cancer.
