Thibodaux, February 1, 2012 - According to the U.S. Centers for Diseases
Control, Louisiana ranks fourth in the country for overweight or obese
children. Obesity can lead to chronic diseases such as heart disease,
stroke, and diabetes. Studies have shown that education, the right diet,
and exercise can prevent or help reduce complications from the most common
diseases that affect us.
To address childhood obesity and as part of our Health and Wellness outreach,
Thibodaux Regional has partnered with Lafourche Parish public and private
schools to provide sixth grade students with education sessions that focus
on better choices for nutrition and physical activity.
This past fall, hospital staff members and physicians began providing nutrition
and fitness instruction in a fun and interactive way. Students have the
opportunity to learn how they can make behavior changes to achieve success
in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“We appreciate the opportunity to work with the schools to address
childhood obesity. As a community leader, we are committed to helping
improve the health and wellness of children in our area,” said Greg
Stock, CEO of Thibodaux Regional.
