Thibodaux Regional Health System is pleased to announce the expansion of
its wound care services with the addition of an outpatient center dedicated
to treating chronic wounds such as diabetes-related foot ulcers, venous
insufficiency ulcers (from swollen legs), pressure sores and other conditions.
Thibodaux Regional Wound Care & Limb Preservation Center located at 290 Bowie Road, Suite A, Thibodaux, will provide state-of-the-art
treatments and technology including two
hyperbaric oxygen therapy units.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is utilized for patients who have conditions
that may benefit from breathing in 100% oxygen under pressure greater
than sea level. Patients with diabetic foot ulcers, late effects of radiation,
chronic bone infections and several other conditions will be evaluated
and appropriately treated utilizing the hyperbaric unit if needed.
“With the incidence and prevalence of chronic, non-healing wounds
on the rise, Thibodaux Regional has further developed services that provide
quality wound care and reduce limb amputations,” said Greg Stock,
CEO, Thibodaux Regional Health System. “Our goal is to improve the
quality of life for patients, and provide comprehensive wound care and
limb preservation care close to home.”
Amputations related to the complications of diabetes such as peripheral
artery disease (poor circulation), are the most common cause of lower-extremity
amputations, and many of these are unnecessary. Approximately 50,000-60,000
major lower-extremity amputations are performed each year in the U.S.
as a result of diabetes-related complications. Thibodaux Regional has
the expertise needed to provide care that can avoid unnecessary amputations
in many patients.
Patients undergo a thorough examination to determine the underlying cause
of a wound, and may receive one or more treatments, which may include:
- Special circulation tests
- Bone scan, MRI or CT scan
- Debridement (removal of dead tissue)
- Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)
- Offloading (removing pressure from the wound with special shoes or other devices)
- Wound biopsy
- Wound cultures
- Other treatments or procedures
